Industrial Systems Engineering is an Erasmus approved course, taught in English, which attracts students from all over the world. The course is offered every spring by the Department of Production and Quality Engineering. In the lab section of the course the students annually make a factory out of Lego, and these videos show these Lego Factories at work.
General description of the lab:
The laboratory experience is the cornerstone of Industrial Systems Engineering. During the course, the students use 8-9 lab sessions to build a factory constructed of only Lego Mindstorms bricks and motors to ‘manufacture’ a product. The students first ‘design’ a Lego product that is producible in a Lego factory; they must analyze the parts and design a production process and factory layout, then plan and execute the building of the factory such that it may be demonstrated in the final lab. Each year they have successfully manufactured a different object.
The feedback from students is Very Positive, as the whole experience allows them to combine the application of their engineering background with working in multidisciplinary, multicultural team environments. The lab encourages the students to practice the theory presented in the literature and the lectures, e.g. lean factory layout, development lifecycle planning and execution, integration, and communication.
As an Erasmus course, the students come from all over the world, and every habitable continent has been represented in the class since 2010. The students practice not only the application of theory, but also address real-life cultural and communications challenges as they build the factory in separate groups and then integrate the whole factory for the final demonstration.
